The hobbit is a great example of
the hero’s journey. In the beginning we have Bilbo’s call to adventure from
Gandalf to join him and a company of dwarves to reclaim their fallen kingdom.
At first we see Bilbo question whether or not this journey would be a good
thing and we see him wanting to stay home to stick with his normal routine.
Then the transformation begins because he decides to join the company of
dwarves to reclaim their home. For most of the story I would say Gandalf and
some of the dwarves are Bilbo’s mentors and helpers.
The challenges and temptations are
definitely seen throughout this story. Bilbo is constantly fighting the urge to
turn around and go back home, he also has to keep fighting to stay strong and positive
because he is seen as the weaker one of the company. The abyss of this story is
probably when Bilbo finds the ring and saves thorin from being killed by the white
orc, this is when the story turns completely and Thorin no longer see’s Bilbo as
useless and finally views him as a warrior. This moves us into the
rebirth/atonement part of the story.
The
return process takes longer because Bilbo still has to fight a dragon and five
armies, but he is completely transformed into a hero by then. Finally bilbo’s
gift of the goddess would be how he changed from the beginning of the story and
all of the gold he receives in the end for joining the company. The hobbit is a
great example of the hero’s journey.
