Coraline has been one of my favorite films
for quite sometime now. This story is about a family that moves into a new
home. The main character a girl named Coraline is adventurous and wanting to
explore her new surroundings. Unfortunately her parents are very busy with
their work and unpacking they don’t have time to spend with Coraline. Because
of this coralline has to explore on her own which leads her to dangerous
places. Inside of the new house her and her family moved into, is a door that
leads to nothing, or so she thought. Late in the night she hears a mouse and
chases it downstairs and discovers that it runs into the door that leads to
nowhere. When she opens the door she discovers a dream world that is the
opposite of hers.
Within this dream
world she finds her parents, well kind of. They are her other parents. Her
other mother and her other father, they are the parents that give her whatever
they want and give her all the attention she seeks. This is the story of
Coraline. I really enjoy this movie cause I like how dark it is but also how
quirky and colorful it is at the same time. Overall this movie follows the
typical heroes journey really well. You have the rebellious, uneducated,
heroine running away from her family or safe place, to begin her journey. You
have the advisor, which is the black cat she befriends within the story that
protects her. Finally you have the villain her other mother and other father.
Throughout the story there are other obstacles as well. I enjoy this heroes
journey because it has this idea that Coraline learns how having perfect
parents isn’t all that its cracked up to be and how at the end of the day her
life isn’t all that bad. It’s
a nice quirky and colorful way to tell kids that being a parent can be
exhausting too and also a way of showing parents how to pay attention to their
children so they don’t find another mother.
